Reading the usage badges

On every product page, coloured usage badges show how to use the oil and whether it needs to be diluted.

The 6 usage badges

What each letter means

The first three tell you how to use the oil. The next three tell you how to apply it to the skin.

How to use it

  • A : Aromatic

For diffusing: 3 to 4 drops in the diffuser, in a well-ventilated room. Never apply it directly inside the nostrils.

  • T : On the skin

Applied to the skin, neat or diluted depending on the badge after the line.

  • I : Internal use

Can be ingested. Always follow the amount shown on the product page.

Does it need diluting?

  • N : Neat

    Can be applied without dilution.

  • S : Sensitive skin

    Dilute for sensitive skin.

  • D : Always dilute

Dilute before any application to the skin, whoever the person.

Aromatic

Diffused and inhaled

The scent of the oil is diffused into the air or inhaled directly.

Do

  • 3 to 4 drops in the diffuser.
  • A few drops on a cotton pad placed in the room.
  • One drop in your palms: rub, then breathe in.
  • A few drops in a spray bottle filled with water.

Avoid

  • Applying the oil on or inside the nose.
  • Diffusing in an unventilated room.

On the skin

Applying and diluting

The badge to the right of the line shows whether dilution is needed. If in doubt, dilute: 1 drop of essential oil per 5 drops of carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, is a good starting point.

Sensitive skin: 1 drop per 3 drops of carrier oil

Always dilute: 1 drop per 10 drops of carrier oil

Do

  • Test on a small patch of skin first.
  • With a citrus oil, keep the area out of the sun for 12 hours.
  • If redness appears, apply a carrier oil: water does not dilute essential oils.
  • Peppermint, On Guard, DigestZen: a few drops are enough.

Avoid

  • The eyes, the ear canal and damaged skin.
  • Using an oil neat if it carries the D badge.

Internal use

Taking an oil internally

Only oils that carry the I badge and whose label allows this use.

Do

  • 1 drop in 120 ml of water, without exceeding the dose on the label (often 1 drop per day).
  • In a vegetable capsule.
  • In cooking, the tip of a toothpick is often enough.

Avoid

  • Drinking an oil neat.
  • Taking an oil that is not labelled for internal use.

Always read the product label

It sets out the permitted uses and the precautions specific to each oil.
